Wild Boar in Sweden
Wild boar or wild pig — It is the wild ancestor of the domestic pig. Wild boar are native across much of Northern and Central Europe, and North Africa. Populations have also been artificially introduced in some parts of the world, most notably the Americas and Australasia. Apparently they are a big problem in Sweden. They were prevalent in South Florida where I grew up.
Swedish story first then a good redneck hunting story from the Everglades.
Boars apparently are a big nuisance in Sweden. They tear up crops, kill livestock and harass homeowners. Don’t know if they taste good but the hunt is on. Big time. Made the national press. Wild boar Boars seem to be attracted to cinnamon rolls (kanelbullar). There is actually a day dedicated to the cinnamon roll in Sweden – kanelbullardag — but Cinnabon is much better and folks here agree with my recipe. Animal rights activists have protested that the use of cinnamon rolls to lure boars out to be killed may cause them to be overweight or have dental disease. It begs the question, do the folks planning to put a high powered slug through their brain care if they get fat or have gum disease?
And to the Florida Everglades. Not far from Miami.
Worked with a guy who was a true redneck. His friends liked to go boar hunting in the Everglades. To make things fun they used knives rather than guns. They would chase boars in a pickup truck, hop on top of them, and slit their throat. One guy mistimed his approach. Boars have large and sharp tusks. And they do not like to be chased by loud vehicles or be hopped upon. Suffice it to say he almost sang soprano for the rest of his life.
